Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)

Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating, or sports-like exercise.

It ranges from the energy expended walking to work, typing, performing yard work, undertaking agricultural tasks, and fidgeting. Even trivial physical activities increase metabolic rate substantially and it is the cumulative impact of a multitude of exothermic actions that culminate in an individual's daily NEAT.

Epidemiological studies highlight the importance of culture in promoting and quashing NEAT. Agricultural and manual workers have high NEAT, whereas wealth and industrialization appear to decrease NEAT.

Practical ways to increase your NEAT levels and improve your fat loss journey.

1) Most of us are working from home and are sitting at our desks throughout the day, naturally expending lesser energy than we used to. If you have a standing desk, you can alternate between standing & sitting for some time and taking 5-6 planned breaks in between.

2) Taking the stairs whenever possible. Though we are tempted to use the elevators, taking the stairs is a simple tool available to us to easily expend energy.

3) Ditching online ordering at times and making it a habit to walk to the grocery/medical store. Also, minimize using your vehicle for short distances and start walking instead.

4) Taking all calls while walking in the room/outdoors. Given that some calls can be quite long, you can get engaged on the call and even forget that you are walking thereby getting the increased activity without the additional time investment.

5) Tying your activity to a daily chore. Like you can become the go-to person for getting all required fruits/vegetables and selecting a store that is slightly away from your home.
